Birthwrites
Identifying, exploring, reclaiming our intangible birthrights
Welcome to Birthwrites. The purpose of this Substack is to explore the “birthrights” we inherit at birth but so often lose sight of due to life circumstances and external influences and voices. Upcoming articles will examine how we can identify something is a “birthright” and what to do once we have. This will be playful, with equal parts curiosity and ignited conviction, drawing from art, literature, nature, spirituality, and philosophy to guide our discoveries.
Here are some examples of human birthrights:
Connection to the natural world
Attention
Love: to love and be loved deeply
To be thoroughly seen and known
Creativity
Wonder and awe
Unselfconscious laughter and delight
Curiosity and childlikeness, beginner’s mind
Simplicity
Open-mindedness and open-heartedness
Softness and tenderness
Freedom from substances and addictions: a clear spiritual channel
Spiritual connection and sustenance
Hunger for beauty, meaning, truth and transcendence
Do some of these resonate? Bring a pang? Did any catch in your throat? Those are perhaps the ones from which you have become most disconnected, or maybe they are the ones with which you were especially gifted at birth and are poised now to revisit and reclaim.
Will you join me?
